What are “Demerit Points,” and how do they work?
When you first obtain your (Ontario) license, your will start off with 0 “demerit points”. But as you drive, you may “gain” demerit points (-2, -3, -4, etc.) whenever you are convicted of breaking certain traffic laws. This doesn’t just apply to the offenses you commit in Ontario – you may also “gain” points if you violate the traffic laws of other Canadian provinces, as well as in the states of New York, and Michigan.
Note that these points will stay on your record for two years from date of your offense, and if you “gain” enough of these points, you will lose your driver’s license.
How many demerit points will I get for __ ?

| – 6 | Careless/reckless driving, racing, failing to stop for school bus, extreme speeding (50 km/h or more)… |
| – 7 | Failing to remain at the scene of accident, failing to stop when signaled or requested by a police officer… |
